Abd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Yazid narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Mutarrif narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, who said:
A year befell the people in which samn (clarified butter) became very dear. During that time ʿUmar—may Allah have mercy on him—contented himself with zayt (oil). His stomach began to rumble, whereupon he said, “Rumble as much as you wish! By Allah, you will not taste clarified butter until the people can obtain it.” He then added, “Soften its heat for me with fire.” Consequently I would cook the oil for him, and he would eat it.
