ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father related to me; Abū Saʿīd, the freedman of Banū Hāshim, related to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—that is, Ibn Abī Salamah—related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ reported:

A supply of musk and ambergris arrived for ʿUmar from Bahrain. ʿUmar said, “By Allah, I wish I could find a woman skilled at weighing who would measure out this perfume for me so that I could distribute it among the Muslims.”

His wife ʿĀtikah bint Zayd ibn ʿAmr ibn Nufayl replied, “I am proficient at weighing—let me do it for you.”

He said, “No.”

She asked, “Why not?”

He answered, “I am afraid you would take it and apply it like this”—he inserted his fingers at his temples—“and then wipe it on your neck, and I would end up giving you a portion that belongs to the Muslims.”
