Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

619 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father related to me; Ḥammad ibn Usāmah related to us; Hishām narrated from his father, who said:

The governor of ʿAylah—or of Adhruʿāt—told me: “When ʿUmar arrived in Syria he sent me his shirt so that I could patch it and wash it for him. It was a striped shirt whose seat had worn through. I washed it, mended it, and sewed for him a new qibṭarī shirt as well. Then I sent both garments back. When they were brought to ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—he felt the qibṭarī and said, ‘This one is softer,’ whereupon he tossed it aside, took up his own shirt and said, ‘This one soaks up sweat better.’”
