606 – Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah narrated to us; Mālik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father:
It was said to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him), “Among the riding camels there is a blind she-camel.” ʿUmar replied, “We shall give her to a household who can make use of her.” I asked, “Even though she is blind?” He said, “They will tether her to the rest of the camels.” I said, “But how will she graze?” He asked, “Is she from the camels taken as jizyah or from those collected as ṣadaqah?” I answered, “No, rather from the jizyah camels.” ʿUmar said, “By Allah, you only want to eat her!” I replied, “She bears the jizyah brand.”
So ʿUmar ordered that the camel be brought; when she was brought, she was slaughtered. He kept nine serving dishes, and whenever any fruit or delicacy came to him he would place some of it in those dishes and send them to the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. What was sent to Ḥafṣah always went last; if there was any shortage, it came out of Ḥafṣah’s share (may Allah be pleased with her and with them all). On this occasion he put portions of that camel’s meat in those dishes and sent them to the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ordered that whatever meat remained be prepared and invited the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār to partake of it.
