604 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Salām narrated to us. He said: I heard al-Ḥasan say, “A sum of money was brought to ʿUmar (may Allah have mercy on him). When Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar, Mother of the Believers, heard of it, she came and said, ‘O Commander of the Believers, your relatives have a rightful share of this wealth. Allah has enjoined us to care for our kin out of such funds.’ ʿUmar replied, ‘My daughter, my relatives’ right is in my own personal property, whereas this money is for meeting the needs of the Muslims. You have wronged your father and favored your relatives—stand up.’ So she left, by Allah, the hem of her garment trailing behind her.
605 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: I read this report aloud to my father.
