Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

603 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Ḥammād ibn Usāmah narrated to us; Hishām informed us, from his father, from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, who said:

ʿUmar sent his attendant Yarfaʾ to summon me, so I went to him while he was in his prayer space, either at dawn or at noon. He said, “I never thought that any portion of this public treasury was lawful for me before I was placed in charge of it, except in accordance with its rightful due. Since the day I was entrusted with it, nothing has been more strictly forbidden to me than betraying that trust. I have spent on you for a full month from the property of Allah, and I will give you no more than that. Yet I will assist you with the price of my estate in al-ʿĀliyah: take an inventory of it, then go to one of your tribesmen who is a merchant. Stand beside him; when he buys something, enter with him as a partner, and use the profit to provide for your family.”
