Report 63: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; Rushdīn ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Harmalah ibn ʿImrān al-Tujaybī, from ʿUqbah ibn Muslim, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“When you see Allah granting a servant the worldly things he desires while he persists in sin, know that this is only a gradual enticement.”
He then recited the Almighty’s words: “So when they forgot the reminder that had come to them, We opened for them the gates of everything. Then, as soon as they rejoiced in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly, and there they were, plunged into despair.” (al-Anʿām 6:44)
٦٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ غَيْلَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِينُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ حَرْمَلَةَ بْنِ ⦗١٤⦘ عِمْرَانَ التُّجَيْبِيِّ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: " إِذَا رَأَيْتَ اللَّهَ – Exalté soit-Il – يُعْطِي الْعَبْدَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا، عَلَى مَعَاصِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ فَإِنَّهُ اسْتِدْرَاجٌ ثُمَّ تَلَا قَوْلَ اللَّهِ – Exalté soit-Il –: ﴿فَلَمَّا نَسُوا مَا ذُكِّرُوا بِهِ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى إِذَا فَرِحُوا بِمَا أُوتُوا أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ مُبْلِسُونَ﴾ [الأنعام: ٤٤] "
