599 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbbād narrated to us; Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Ibn Judʿān, who said: “ʿUmar used to carry a darrah (a short disciplinary staff), and when ʿUthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—became caliph, he adopted an even sterner darrah than that.”
