597 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbbād narrated to us; Hātim—meaning ibn Ismāʿīl—narrated to us, from Ḥishām ibn Saʿd, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said: A sum of money was brought to ʿUmar and placed in the mosque. He came out to it, inspecting and examining it, and his eyes filled with tears. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf said, “O Commander of the Believers, what makes you weep? By Allah, this is surely one of the occasions for gratitude!” ʿUmar replied, “By Allah, no people have ever been given the likes of this without enmity and mutual hatred being sown among them.”
