593 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ghaylan narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Judʿan, who said:

ʿUmar once overheard a man praying, “O Allah, make me among the few.” ʿUmar asked him, “Servant of Allah, who are the ‘few’?” The man replied, “I have heard Allah say, ‘And none believed with him except a few’ (Hud 40) and, ‘Yet only a few of My servants are truly grateful’ (Sabaʾ 13),” and he mentioned other verses besides. ʿUmar then remarked, “Everyone is more knowledgeable than ʿUmar.”
