ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu al-Mughīrah narrated to us; ʿUtbah narrated; and Abu Ḍamrah said:
Abu Bakr once addressed the people. After praising and glorifying Allah he declared:
“Soon al-Shām (Greater Syria) will be opened to you. You will arrive at an exalted land where you will enjoy bread and olive oil, and in that land mosques will be built for you. Therefore, beware lest Allah know that you frequent them merely for amusement; they were erected only for the remembrance of Allah.”
٥٩٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، حَدَّثَنَا عُتْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو ضَمْرَةَ قَالَ: خَطَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّهُ سَتُفْتَحُ لَكُمْ الشَّأْمُ فَتَأْتُونَ أَرْضًا ⦗٩٤⦘ رَفِيعَةً حَيْثُ تُمَتَّعُونَ فِيهَا مِنَ الْخُبْزِ وَالزَّيْتِ، وَسَتُبْنَى لَكُمْ بِهَا مَسَاجِدُ فَإِيَّاكُمْ أَنْ يَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – أَنَّكُمْ إِنَّمَا تَأْتُونَهَا تَلَهِّيًا إِنَّمَا بُنِيَتْ لِلذِّكْرِ»
