- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu al-Mughīrah narrated to us; ʿUtbah narrated; and Abu Ḍamrah—meaning Ibn Ḥabīb ibn Suhayb—narrated:
When one of Abu Bakr’s sons was on his death-bed, he kept glancing toward a cushion. After the young man passed away, the people said to Abu Bakr, “We noticed your son looking at that cushion.” They lifted the cushion and found beneath it five—or perhaps six—gold dinars. Abu Bakr struck one hand against the other and kept reciting, “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return” (Qur’an 2:156). Then he exclaimed, “O so-and-so! I do not think your skin can stretch to hold them.”
