  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Dawud ibn ʿAmr al-Himsi informed us; ʿAbd al-Jabbar ibn al-Ward narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said:

ʿAisha—may Allah be pleased with her—said: When my father (may Allah have mercy on him) was in his final illness he summoned me and said, “My dear daughter, I once allotted you some of the dates of Khaybar, but you never actually took them, and I would now like you to give them back to me.”

I began to weep and replied, “May Allah forgive you, Father. By Allah, even if all of Khaybar were pure gold I would still return it to you.”

He said, “They are to be dealt with according to the Book of Allah. My daughter, I used to trade on behalf of Quraysh and was the wealthiest among them; but when the responsibilities of leadership absorbed my time, I considered it proper to draw from the public funds only in proportion to what that office took of my efforts. My daughter, all that remains to me is this Qatwani cloak, a milk-pail, and a servant; so when I die,”
