ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to me; he said: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl informed us, from Ismāʿīl, from Qays, who said:
“Abu Bakr had a servant. Whenever the servant brought him his earnings, Abu Bakr would never eat anything from them until he had first asked the man about their source. If it was something he deemed permissible, he would eat; but if it was something he disliked, he would abstain. One night he forgot and ate without questioning him. Later, when he did ask, the servant told him that the money had come from a source Abu Bakr found objectionable. At once Abu Bakr thrust his hand into his throat and vomited until nothing at all was left in his stomach.”
