Report 59: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us. He said: I heard Qatādah relate, from Muṭarrif, from his father, who said:
I reached the Prophet—may blessings and peace be upon him—while he was reciting, “Rivalry for increase has distracted you” (Sūrat al-Takāthur 1). Then he said: “The child of Adam says, ‘My wealth! My wealth!’ Yet of your wealth you truly possess nothing except what you eat and consume, what you wear and wear out, or what you give in charity and thus send ahead.”
