- ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād al-Makkī narrated to me; Sufyān narrated to us from Tuʿmah al-Jaʿfarī, who said:
David—peace be upon him—asked his Lord, Allah the Mighty and Majestic, to show him the companion who was his counterpart among the people of the earth. Allah revealed to him: “Go to such-and-such a village and look for the man who engages in such-and-such a task; he is your companion.”
David went to the village, inquired about him, and was directed to him. He found a man who would enter the thicket and brush, cut reeds, bind them into a bundle, then come to the marketplace and announce, “Who will buy something wholesome for something wholesome? I cut it with my own hands and carried it on my back.”
٥٥٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ الْمَكِّيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا طُعْمَةُ الْجَعْفَرِيُّ أَنَّ دَاوُدَ (عليه السلام) سَأَلَ رَبَّهُ (تعالى) أَنْ يُرِيَهُ قَرِينَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ، فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – إِلَيْهِ: ائْتِ قَرْيَةَ كَذَا، فَانْظُرِ الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا فَإِنَّهُ قَرِينُكَ، فَأَتَى الْقَرْيَةَ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَدُلَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَإِذَا هُوَ رَجُلٌ يَأْتِي الْغَيْضَةَ وَالْأَجَمَةَ، فَيَقْطَعُهُ قَصَبًا، فَيَحْزُمُ حُزْمَةً، ثُمَّ يَأْتِي السُّوقَ، فَيَقُولُ: مَنْ يَشْتَرِي طَيِّبًا بِطَيِّبٍ، قَطَعْتُهُ بِيَدَيَّ، وَحَمَلْتُهُ عَلَى ظَهْرِي؟ "
