Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

551 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Dāwūd ibn ʿImrān informed us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Dīnār, who said:

“When Luqmān returned from a journey, he met his servant on the road and asked, ‘What has become of my father?’ The servant replied, ‘He has died.’ Luqmān said, ‘Praise be to Allah; I now control my own affairs.’

He asked, ‘And my mother—what happened to her?’ The servant answered, ‘She has died.’ Luqmān said, ‘My grief has lifted.’

He asked, ‘And my wife?’ The servant replied, ‘She has died.’ Luqmān said, ‘My bed has been renewed.’

He asked, ‘And my sister?’ The servant replied, ‘She has died.’ Luqmān said, ‘My nakedness is now covered.’

He finally asked, ‘And my brother—what has become of him?’ The servant replied, ‘He has died.’ Luqmān said, ‘My back is broken.’”
