549 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father transmitted it to me; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd related to us; al-Masʿūdī reported from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said:
Luqmān said to his son, “Hope in Allah with a hope that never lets you feel safe from His devising, and fear Allah with a fear that never makes you despair of His mercy.”
The son asked, “Father, how can I manage that when I have only one heart?”
He replied, “My son, the believer has two hearts: one with which he hopes and one with which he fears.”
