Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

‘Abd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ‘Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us; Ayyub narrated to us, from the book of Ibn Qilabah, on the authority of Luqman—that it was said to him:

“Which people are the most knowledgeable?”

He answered, “Those who add the knowledge of others to their own.”

He was asked, “Which people are the wealthiest?”

He replied, “The ones who are content with what they have been given.”

He was then asked, “Which people are the best?”

He said, “The believer who is rich.”

The people exclaimed, “Rich in money?”

He responded, “No, rather rich in knowledge: for if others need him, they find with him knowledge, and if no one needs him, that knowledge suffices to enrich his own soul.”
