Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

517 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—my father narrated to me—Muhammad narrated to us—Mundhir narrated—from Wahb:

“A wandering ascetic and the attendant who accompanied him used to receive their food once every three days. Then, on one occasion, the food failed to arrive for one of them. The elder said to his attendant, ‘Someone among us has done something that has cut off his provision; think back on what you have done.’

The attendant replied, ‘I have done nothing.’ A little later he recollected and said, ‘Yes, indeed. A poor beggar came to the door and I slammed it shut in his face.’

The elder said, ‘That is the cause of what has happened to us.’ He then sought Allah’s forgiveness, and afterward their provision came to them once more just as it used to.”
