Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

…he kept going back to the lamp until the fire had consumed his very fingers. She was watching him the whole time; the sight overwhelmed her—she collapsed and died.

When morning came, the men hurried over to see what had happened. They found her lifeless.

They cried, “Enemy of Allah, hypocrite! You violated her and then killed her!” They dragged him to their king, bore witness against him, and the king ordered his execution.

He pleaded, “Allow me first to pray two cycles.” He performed the prayer and then supplicated: “O Lord, I know You would never hold me accountable for what I have not done, but I beg You: do not let me become a disgrace to the devotees who will come after me.”

Allah restored her soul; she said, “Look at his hand,” and then she died once more.

515 – Ghawth ibn Jābir narrated: I heard ʿAqīl relate that he heard Wahb—meaning Ibn Munabbih—say, “One of the wandering ascetics was staying in a house near a village…” He told the story in a similar fashion, except that she said, “When I saw that both his hands were burned, I fainted where I was. Then I said, ‘Go away! I shall never be your companion for as long as I live,’ and she wandered off into the mountains.”
