491 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAttab ibn Ziyad narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah—that is, Ibn al-Mubarak—informed us; Maʿmar informed us, from Jaʿfar ibn Burqan, who said:

“Jesus son of Mary, peace be upon him, used to say:

‘O Allah, this morning I possess nothing of what I hope for, nor do I have the power to avert what I fear. The matter lies in the hand of another, and I have awakened a hostage to my own deeds. No one is poorer than I.’”
