483 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father informed me; Haytham ibn Kharijah reported to us; Ibn ʿAllāq reported, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from his teachers, that Jesus—peace be upon him—once passed by the ascent of Afīq, accompanied by one of his disciples. A man confronted them, blocked the road, and said, “I will not let the two of you pass until I have slapped each of you once.” They tried to appease him, but he insisted. Jesus said, “As for my cheek, strike it.” The man slapped him and allowed him to go. Then he turned to the disciple and said, “I will not let you pass until I slap you.” The disciple resisted, and when Jesus saw this, he offered him his other cheek. The man slapped him as well and then let them both proceed. Jesus—peace be upon him—then prayed, “O Allah, if this meets with Your approval, bring me to Your pleasure; but if it is displeasing, then You are worthier of avenging.”
