- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father related to me; ʿUmar ibn Saʿd Abū Dāwūd al-Ḥafarī narrated to us, from Sufyān, who said:
Jesus son of Mary—peace be upon him—used to say: “Love of this world is the root of every sin, and wealth contains many ailments.”
They asked, “What is its ailment?”
He replied, “Its owner is seldom safe from boasting and arrogance.”
They said, “And if he is safe from that?”
He answered, “Then attending to it keeps him so occupied that he is diverted from the remembrance of Allah, Exalted is He.”
٤٧٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ قَالَ: " كَانَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ (عليه السلام) يَقُولُ: " حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا أَصْلُ كُلِّ خَطِيئَةٍ، وَالْمَالُ فِيهِ دَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ، قَالُوا: وَمَا دَاؤُهُ؟ قَالَ: لَا يَسْلَمُ صَاحِبُهُ مِنَ الْفَخْرِ وَالْخُيَلَاءِ قَالُوا: فَإِنْ سَلِمَ؟ قَالَ: يَشْغَلُهُ إِصْلَاحُهُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى "
