ʿAbd Allah narrated—my father narrated—ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated: I heard Maʿmar say, “The children said to John son of Zechariah, ‘Come with us and let us play.’ He replied, ‘We were not created for play.’ Thereupon Allah revealed: ‘We bestowed upon him wisdom while he was still a child’ (Maryam 19:12).”
٤٦٤ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَعْمَرًا يَقُولُ: " قَالَ الصِّبْيَانُ لِيَحْيَى بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا: اذْهَبْ بِنَا، فَلْنَلْعَبْ قَالَ: مَا لِلَّعْبِ خُلِقْنَا " قَالَ: " فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ، – Exalté soit-Il –: ﴿وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا﴾ [مريم: ١٢] "
