Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

Hadith 429: ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father related to me; Muʾammal related to us; Sufyān transmitted to us, from Ḥabīb, who said:

A man once passed by Jacob, the Prophet of God (peace be upon him). His eyebrows had drooped over his eyes, so he had lifted them with a cloth. The man asked, “O Prophet of God, what has brought you to the condition I see?” He replied, “The long span of time and the abundance of grief.” God then revealed to him, “O Jacob, are you complaining about Me?” He said, “My Lord, it is a sin—so forgive it.”
