Hadith 424: ʿAbd Allah related to us; Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqaddamī informed us; Salām ibn Abī al-Sahbāʾ narrated to us; Thābit transmitted from Anas, who said:

Allah—exalted be He—revealed to Joseph: “Who saved you from death when your brothers were determined to kill you?” He answered, “You did, my Lord.” He said, “And who rescued you from the well when they cast you into it?” He answered, “You did, my Lord.” He said, “Then why did you mention a man and forget Me?” He replied, “It was merely a word that slipped from my tongue.” Allah said, “By My might, I shall confine you to prison for several years.”
