Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

Hadith 412: ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Sulami told me; Rawḥ ibn ʿUbādah related, from Qazaʿah ibn Suwayd, from Abu ʿAbd Allah, the mu’adhdhin of al-Taʾif, who said:

“Gabriel came to Joseph, peace be upon him, and asked, ‘O Joseph, has imprisonment become hard for you?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Gabriel then said, ‘Say:

“O Allah, grant me, in every matter that troubles or distresses me—whether of this world or the hereafter—relief and a way out. Provide for me from sources I could never anticipate; forgive me my sin; make my hope firm, and sever it from everyone but You, so that I place my hope in none but You.”’
