403 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father informed me; Ismaʿil related to us; Ibn ʿAwn transmitted from Muhammad that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once entered upon Bilal—may Allah have mercy on him—and saw beside him several heaps of dates. He asked, “What is this?” Bilal replied, “These are dates I have stored away.” The Prophet said, “Do you not fear that they might give off vapor in the Fire of Hell? Spend, O Bilal, and do not fear poverty from the Lord of the Throne.”
