Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

401 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father informed me; Yazīd reported to us; Abū Umayyah ibn Faḍālah related: I heard Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ say that Abū Dharr said: “My intimate friend (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined seven things upon me:

  1. That I should look to those who are beneath me and not look to those above me;
  2. That I should love the poor and keep close to them;
  3. That I should speak the truth, even if it is bitter;
  4. That I should ask nothing of anyone;
  5. That I should maintain ties of kinship, even if they turn away from me;
  6. That I should not fear the reproach of any critic for Allah’s sake;
  7. And that I should make frequent mention of: la ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā billāh (there is no power nor strength except through Allah).”
