- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—my father narrated to me—Rawḥ narrated to us—Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatādah, from al-Ḥusayn, who said:
“Yahya and Jesus, peace be upon them both, once met. Jesus said to Yahya, ‘Seek forgiveness for me, for you are better than I.’ Yahya replied, ‘Rather, you seek forgiveness for me, for you are better than I.’ Jesus responded, ‘You are indeed better than I; I have pronounced peace upon myself, whereas Allah pronounced peace upon you.’ Thus Allah, blessed and exalted is He, made manifest the virtue of them both.”
٣٩٤ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ: " إِنَّ يَحْيَى وَعِيسَى (رحمه الله) الْتَقَيَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ عِيسَى: اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي؛ أَنْتَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي، فَقَالَ لَهُ يَحْيَى: اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي؛ أَنْتَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي، قَالَ لَهُ عِيسَى: أَنْتَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي؛ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي، وَسَلَّمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ فَعَرَفَ اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – فَضْلَهُمَا "
