384. ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Ibrāhīm ibn Khālid narrated to us; ʿAbdullāh ibn Baḥīr told me, saying: I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih relate:

“Moses, peace be upon him, said to the Children of Israel, ‘Bring me the most virtuous man among you.’ They brought him a certain man, and Moses asked, ‘Are you truly the best of the Children of Israel?’ He answered, ‘That is what they claim.’ Moses then said, ‘Go and bring me the worst of them.’

The man went off and returned alone. Moses asked, ‘Have you brought me their worst?’ He replied, ‘I know of no one among them whose faults exceed what I know of in my own self.’ Moses said, ‘Then you are their best.’”
