- ʿAbdullāh narrated to us—my father narrated to me—Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us—Ṣāliḥ narrated to us—from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī—from Abū al-Jald—from Maslama: that the Prophet David (peace be upon him) said, “My Lord, how can I thank You when I can reach gratitude for You only through Your own favour?” Thereupon Allah revealed to him: “O David, do you not know that every blessing you possess is from Me?” He replied, “Indeed, O Lord.” He said, “Then that acknowledgment is the gratitude I accept from you.”
