- ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿUmar al-Jushamī informed us; Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān informed us; al-Jaʿd informed us, saying:
“It has reached us that David—peace be upon him—said:
‘My Lord, what is the reward for someone who consoles a grieving person, seeking nothing but Your countenance?’
He replied, ‘His reward is that I clothe him in the garment of piety.’
David asked, ‘My Lord, what is the reward for someone who follows a funeral procession, desiring thereby nothing but Your countenance?’
He replied, ‘His reward is that My angels shall accompany him when he dies, and that I shall bless his soul among the souls.’
David asked, ‘My Lord, what is the reward for someone who supports an orphan or a widow?’”
Jaʿfar said: I asked Abū ʿUthmān—who is al-Jaʿd—“What does ‘supports’ (asnada) mean?” He answered, “That he seeks nothing by it except Your countenance.”
He said, “His reward is that I shall shade him beneath the shade of My Throne on the Day when there is no shade except My shade.”
David asked, “My Lord, what is the reward for someone whose eyes overflow with tears out of fear of You?”
He replied, “His reward is that I grant him security on the Day of the Greatest Terror, and that I shield his face from the scorching blast of Hell.”
