Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbdullāh narrated to us—he said: My father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; Jābir b. Zayd narrated to us, from al-Mughīrah b. ʿUyaynāh, who said:

David—peace be upon him—said, “My Lord, has any one of Your creatures spent this night in remembrance of You longer than I have?” Allah revealed to him, “Yes—the frog.” He then sent down to him the verse: “Work, O House of David, in gratitude, for few of My servants are truly grateful” (Q 34:13).

David said, “My Lord, how can I possibly give You due thanks? You bless me, then You provide for me because of that blessing, and then You heap upon me yet another blessing after blessing. The favors are from You, my Lord, and even gratitude is from You—so how can I ever thank You, my Lord?”

Allah replied, “Now, O David, you have truly recognized Me as I deserve to be recognized.”
