- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd narrated to us; Ḥarmalah narrated to us; and Kaʿb ibn ʿAlqamah related:
“When Moses, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, fled from Pharaoh he prayed, ‘My Lord, give me counsel.’
Allah said, ‘My counsel is that you never set anything on a par with Me; always choose Me above all else. I shall show no mercy to, nor declare pure, anyone who fails to do so.’
Moses asked, ‘And what else, my Lord?’
He said, ‘Be good to your mother, for she carried you in hardship upon hardship.’
Moses said, ‘Then what, my Lord?’
He said, ‘Then to your father.’
Moses asked, ‘And what after that?’
He said, ‘Love for people what you love for yourself, and dislike for them what you dislike for yourself.’
Moses said, ‘Then what, my Lord?’
He said, ‘If I entrust you with any affair of My servants, do not make it hard for them to reach you with their needs; for when you make it hard for them, you only weary My Spirit. I am indeed All-Seeing, All-Hearing, Ever-Present as Witness and the One before Whom testimony is borne.’”
