Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

336 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from a man, from Abū Saʿīd who said:

A man placed his hand on the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and exclaimed, “I can scarcely keep my hand on you because your fever is so intense!”

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied: “We, the company of prophets, have our trials multiplied just as our reward is multiplied. A prophet from among the prophets might be tested with lice until they killed him; another might be tested with poverty until he would take a single cloak and crawl about wrapped in it. Yet they would rejoice in affliction just as you rejoice in ease.”
