- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father informed us; Yazīd informed us; Abū Maʿshar reported, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, who said:
A man came to Jesus, son of Mary, and said, “O teacher of goodness, teach me something you know but I am ignorant of—something that will benefit me and will not trouble you.”
Jesus asked, “What is it you seek?”
The man said, “How can a servant be truly God-fearing toward Allah?”
He replied, “It is a simple matter: love Allah sincerely with all your heart; work for His sake with all the effort and strength you can muster; and show mercy to your own kind as you show mercy to yourself.”
The man asked, “O teacher of goodness, and who are my ‘own kind’?”
Jesus answered, “All the children of Adam. Whatever you dislike to have done to you, do not do to anyone else. Act thus, and you will be genuinely God-fearing toward Allah.”
٣٣٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا أبِي، أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ قَالَ: " جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ فَقَالَ: يَا مُعَلِّمَ الْخَيْرِ، عَلِّمْنِي شَيْئًا تَعْلَمُهُ وَأَجْهَلُهُ، وَيَنْفَعُنِي وَلَا يَضُرُّكَ، قَالَ: مَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ: كَيْفَ يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ تَقِيًّا لِلَّهِ – Exalté soit-Il – حَقًّا؟ قَالَ: بِيَسِيرٍ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ؛ تُحِبُّ اللَّهَ حَقًّا مِنْ قَلْبِكَ، وَتَعْمَلُ لَهُ بِكُدُودِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتَ، وَتَرْحَمُ بَنِي جِنْسِكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ نَفْسَكَ، قَالَ: يَا مُعَلِّمَ الْخَيْرِ، وَمَنْ بَنُو جِنْسِي؟ قَالَ: «وَلَدُ آدَمَ كُلُّهُمْ، وَمَا لَا تُحِبُّ أَنْ يُؤْتَى إِلَيْكَ، فَلَا تَأْتِهِ إِلَى غَيْرِكَ؛ فَأَنْتَ تَقِيٌّ لِلَّهِ حَقًّا»
