- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAwf ibn Jābir informed us, saying: I heard Abū al-Hudhayl say: I heard a monk relate: “Iblīs once said to Jesus—peace be upon him—after placing him upon the Temple Mount: ‘You claim that you raise the dead; if that is so, then pray to God to turn this mountain into bread.’ Jesus—peace be upon him—answered, ‘Do all people live by bread alone?’ Iblīs then said, ‘If you are as you claim, then leap from here, for the angels will catch you.’ Jesus replied, ‘My Lord—exalted is He—has commanded me not to put myself to the test; thus I do not know whether He would keep me safe or not.’”
