310. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Hāshim narrated to us; Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, from Abū al-Jald, that Jesus son of Mary—peace be upon him—said to the disciples:

“Truly I say to you: you seek neither this world nor the Hereafter.”

They replied, “O Messenger of Allah, explain this matter to us, for we had assumed that we were after one of the two.”

He said, “Had you desired the world, you would have obeyed the Lord of the world—He who holds the keys to all its treasures in His hand—and He would have bestowed it upon you. And had you desired the Hereafter, you would have obeyed the Lord of the Hereafter, who owns it, and He would have granted it to you. But, in reality, you seek neither this nor that.”
