’Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: “My father narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn Rufayʿ, from Abū Thumāmah al-Ṣāyadī, who said:

“The disciples said to Jesus, son of Mary—peace be upon him—‘Who is the one who is truly sincere to Allah?’ He replied, ‘He who acts solely for Allah and does not wish people to praise him for it.’

They asked, ‘Then who is the one who gives sincere counsel for Allah?’ He answered, ‘It is he who gives priority to Allah’s right: he prefers Allah’s right over the rights of people. Whenever two matters confront him—one worldly and one concerning the Hereafter—he begins with the affair of the Hereafter and turns to the worldly matter only afterward.’”

Sufyān added: “Manṣūr related this report to me from him; later I met the transmitter myself and asked him about it.”
