Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

Abd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to me—Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Anas informed us—Mundhir related, on the authority of Wahb: A wandering ascetic once worshipped God for seventy years. One day he ventured out, deliberately lessening his customary devotions, and he poured out his grief to God and acknowledged his sin. Thereupon a messenger from God came to him and said, “This very sitting of yours is more beloved to God than all the deeds you performed during the years that have passed of your life.”
