- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to me—ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us—Bakkār related: I heard Wahb report that the Lord, exalted be He, said to the scholars of the Children of Israel:
“You pursue jurisprudence for purposes other than devotion, you acquire knowledge without intending to act upon it, and you seek the life of this world through deeds meant for the Hereafter. You dress in sheep’s wool while concealing the hearts of wolves. You strain the specks from your drink yet swallow unlawful things as vast as mountains. You make the religion burdensome for the people—heavier than mountains—yet you do not help them even by lifting a little finger. You whiten your garments and lengthen your prayers, but by doing so you consume the wealth of the orphan and the widow. By My might, I swear: I shall surely smite you with a trial in which the judgment of the judicious will go astray and the wisdom of the wise will be confounded.”
