- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to me—ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us—Bakkār related: I heard Wahb report that the Children of Israel were struck by punishment and severe hardship. They said to one of their prophets, “We wish we knew what would please our Lord so that we could follow it.” Thereupon Allah—exalted is He—revealed to that prophet: “Your people say, ‘We would love to know what pleases Me so we might act upon it.’ Tell them: if they seek My good pleasure, let them please the poor; for when they satisfy the poor, I am pleased, and when they anger them, I am angered.”
