- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to us—ʿAlī ibn Thābit narrated to us—Hishām ibn Saʿd told me—on the authority of Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Noah, peace be upon him, counselled his son …,” and he related something similar to the report transmitted by Yazīd from Ibn al-Mujabbar, adding: “As for the two things I forbid you from, they are arrogance and shirk (associating partners with Allah).”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is arrogance that I should have a fine cloak to wear?” He replied, “No, for Allah is Beautiful and He loves beauty.”
He asked, “Is arrogance that I own a sound mount to ride?” He said, “No.”
He asked, “Is arrogance that I have companions who follow me and whom I feed?” He said, “No.”
He then asked, “So what, O Messenger of Allah, is arrogance?” He replied, “It is to reject the truth and to look down on others.”
ʿAlī (ibn Thābit) said, “I asked Hishām, ‘What does taghmis (‘to look down on’) mean?’ He answered, ‘It means to disparage them.’”
