- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us—my father narrated to us—Yazīd narrated to us—Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Mujabbar informed us—from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Noah, peace be upon him, said to his son: ‘My son, I shall leave you with a single advice and restrict it to these words so that you never forget it. I enjoin two things upon you and I forbid you two things.
As for the two I enjoin: I have observed that they often ascend to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and His righteous servants rejoice in them:
-
The words “Subḥānallāhi wa bi-ḥamdih” (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him); they are the prayer of all creation, and by them creation receives its provision.
-
The words “Lā ilāha illā Allāh, alone without partner”; if the heavens and the earth were a single ring, these words would shatter it, and if they were placed on one pan of a scale, they would outweigh everything else.
As for the two I forbid you: associating partners with Allah and arrogance. If you can meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with a heart free of shirk and arrogance, then do so.’”
