28 – ʿAbd Allāh related to us; my father related to me; Hishām ibn Saʿīd related to us; Muḥammad ibn Muhājir related to us; my brother ʿAmr ibn Muhājir told me:
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—may Allah have mercy on him—kept a small room in which he would withdraw. Inside that room were the very objects the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left behind: a bed laced together with a strap, a wooden bowl from which water was drunk, a jar whose mouth was broken but in which things were still kept, a leather cushion stuffed with palm-fiber, and a greyish cloak—much like the coarse Jarmuqānī blankets—bearing traces of the Prophet’s hair ﷺ. Then he would declare, “O Quraysh! This is the legacy of the one through whom Allah honored and exalted you; he left this world possessing no more than what you now behold.”
