2366. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Mubārak narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī:

He was once attending a funeral. He sat down beside a sunken grave, and a man from the family of the deceased was there. ʿUthmān said, “O So-and-so!” When the man came over he said, “Look right here.” The man looked, and ʿUthmān said, “I see it as a cramped, parched, pitch-dark house in which there is no food, no drink, and no wife.” Then he added, “By Allah, that is your dwelling.”

The man replied, “You have spoken the truth. Yet, by Allah, were you to go back to the grave, its occupant would surely be tossed about from one side to the other—so do not do it.”
