- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; al-Mubārak, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was lying on a couch whose surface was laced with straps. Under his head was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber. Several of his Companions came in after me, and then ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ shifted slightly, and ʿUmar could see that there was no cloth between his side and the cords; the straps had left marks on the Prophet’s blessed side. ʿUmar began to weep. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “What makes you weep, O ʿUmar?” He replied, “By Allah, I weep only because I know that you are more honored by Allah than Kisrā (the Persian emperor) and Qaysar (the Byzantine emperor), yet they squander the luxuries of this world while you, the Messenger of Allah, are in the condition I behold.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Are you not pleased that for them is this world and for us is the Hereafter?” ʿUmar replied, “Indeed, I am.” He ﷺ said, “Then so it shall be.”
