- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; al-Haytham ibn Kharijah narrated to us; al-Muʿafā ibn ʿImrān ⦗323⦘ al-Mawsili al-Azdi narrated to us, from Abu Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Maryam, from Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabib, from Umm ʿAbd Allah—the sister of Shaddad ibn Aws—that she once sent the Prophet ﷺ a cup of milk to break his fast with, on a long, sweltering day. He sent her messenger back, asking, “Where did you get this milk?” She replied, “It is the milk of one of my sheep.” He sent the messenger again, asking, “And where did you get this sheep?” She answered, “I bought it with my own money.” Only then did he drink.
The next day Umm ʿAbd Allah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I sent you that milk out of compassion for you because of the long day and the intense heat, yet you returned your messenger to me about it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “The messengers before me were commanded not to eat anything but what is pure, and not to do anything but what is righteous.”
